new student technology help guide what to bring

Congratulations on your decision to join the DU Community! As you plan to arrive on campus, follow the guidelines below when purchasing technology. Any time you have questions, feel free to call the IT Computer Help Center at 303-871-4700. Although our students have been born into a world infused with technology at every turn, they still need guidance to be successful users and consumers of that technology. This applies to the world at large as well as in our classrooms. The following checklist is intended to outline key considerations for teachers in setting up a tech-rich classroom environment where students are empowered for success.

The checklist is less about things that students need to do on their own and more about the technology skills and routines that teachers can help students develop in order to be effective digital... This item starts right at the beginning. What should students bring to class, both on the first day and also each day thereafter? Since COVID, most schools now provide computing devices for students. Students sometimes get to take these home with them, while other times, they remain in the classroom. Regardless of the situation, students need to know what to bring with them to class.

If they have been allowed to keep devices over the summer, you’ll want to send home a communication to remind them to bring their device with them to class on the first day of... If devices have been turned in or are stored in the classroom, then it’ll be up to you or your school tech support staff to organize the redistribution of devices. Once students have their devices, they should have a clear idea of what to bring to class and on what days. Do you want students to get in the habit of bringing their technology every day, or will they only bring it in on certain days? Know that it’s probably easiest if students are asked to bring their tech every day, as this will reduce confusion and help to ensure that it’s available when you need it. While BGSU does not have a computer purchase requirement, the expectations related to technology can vary significantly based upon the academic program and what is prevalent in that field.

This guide is designed to support academic success by providing BGSU students with technology recommendations based upon their major course of study. Those academic programs have also included information on software and accessories appropriate for their academic disciplines. In addition, Ziggabyte® and ITS have provided helpful information about using technology and related services offered at BGSU. Most students looking to bring a laptop should be fine with the base standard laptop of their choice listed below. Some academic programs require computers with more capabilities and so we have put together a list of those programs and if they recommend the medium or high standards that are also detailed below. Select the Base, Medium, or High Standard tabs to see more information on the Windows devices recommended by BGSU.

We recommend that students have personal access to a device or combination of devices that enable them to communicate and take notes in virtual sessions, temporarily store files offline until they can be added... Students taking required core biology, chemistry, and/or math courses (required courses in hundreds of undergraduate majors) will need a device that can engage in digital inking with a touch screen and stylus. The recommended singular device to meet all of these needs is a 2-in-1 laptop. A 2-in-1 laptop is a portable device with a keyboard and a touchscreen.

Tech Hub offers a selection of Dell and Apple devices that support digital inking. Students should visit their college website for more information if they are in a program that may have more specific or elevated technology needs. Graduate and professional students should check with their college or program for technology needs. As part of the Buckeye Technology Equity Commitment, Ohio State offers loaner devices for short and long-term loans to students with limited technology access and identified financial needs. The Student Technology Loan Program (STLP) offers Surface Go and iPad Air technology kits, and most loans can be renewed at the end of each semester. Learn more about eligibility.
