This checklist is designed to help you navigate the tools and services that will support your studies, connect you with valuable resources, and set you up for success from day one. Let's get started on making the most of your educational experience by ensuring you're fully equipped with the technology and support you need. Students may designate a preferred first name (PFN) in university systems and applications. For example, if a student’s name is “Robert” but prefers to be known as “Bobby”, the student can update their preferred name, which systems will then use or display. All students are given an Outlook Online email inbox.

Check your inbox on any device by visiting outlook.office.com and entering your NetID@illinois.edu. You’ll be directed to the University sign-in page where you can sign in with your complete university email address and password. To set up IllinoisNet, use your device’s mobile data or the IllinoisNet_Guest visitor network to navigate to http://go.illinois.edu/IllinoisNetSetup. That page will detect your device and guide you through the connection process. If your device doesn’t have any access to Wi-Fi to access the above link, connect to IllinoisNet_Guest via your computer’s Wi-Fi list, then access the above link.

Complete the following checklist prior to the start of classes. Some of these items can be completed before International Student Check-In. Not all items are applicable to all students. If you have questions, please contact us! Visit the I-Card website for directions on getting an I-Card. You will need to obtain your NetID and set your password online to have computing access on campus.

You will be asked for your name, UIN, and date of birth. Students in F-1 and J-1 status are required by federal law to report a local address upon arrival to the United States and within 10 days anytime they move. This can be done via iSTART. Please visit the Updating Your Address page for more information on how to update your local U.S. address. Graduate Students should report to their departments and attend any required orientation sessions.

Every department will have slightly different requirements and priorities, but this checklist should assist in developing a checklist designed specifically for your department. International students must check in with International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), 432 Student Services Building, 610 East John Street, Champaign. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday; phone is 217-333-1303. Important issues include application for a Social Security Number, attendance at orientation, registration for English Placement Test (EPT) if necessary, and SEVIS program validation.

International students must also complete an I-9 Employment Eligibility form through their departments if they are to become employees. All students should check in with their department's graduate office upon arrival on campus. Departments may have forms for students to fill out, and may distribute keys or assign mailboxes at this time. Some departments also have their own mandatory orientation programs, in addition to campus-wide orientation. Departments will vary in how and when students receive their teaching assignments. Students on assistantships might need to check in with human resources in the unit that is paying their stipend, and complete the I-9 form.

The Quick Guide is an easy resource to give new students information outlining steps to take before they come to campus and about gaining access to campus computing and services. It also gives the link to the Graduate College Handbook. Many departments require that new students meet with their adviser to plan their program before registering for classes. The checklist is fully self-paced but should be completed at least ten days prior to the start of courses. Please note that you will not be able to complete many of your checklist items until you receive your Official Notice of Admission described in Step 1. More specifically, not knowing crucial information about the university can be a big block to adjusting smoothly. Like any university, the University of Illinois has its own protocols and resources for the technology students need to succeed. Knowing how to access that information is crucial for your everyday learning experience. Whether you are starting your first semester here or need a refresher on technology essentials, the list highlights key technology-related information you should be aware of as you settle into the Illinois community.

Your Self-Service account and degree audit can be accessed using your NetID and password. These accounts are very important during your time at the University of Illinois. Self–Service provides information about student employment, tuition, grades, etc., and your degree audit is the account you use to navigate progress in your degree. The degree audit is used to help you choose the right classes needed to graduate on time. Your University Identification Number (UIN) is a unique nine-digit number found on your I-card or the Illinois app. Your NetID is the username for your email or your self-service account (personal academic account).

You should receive an email to account that was used during your application process. That email provides your UIN and activation code to know your NetID. IllinoisNet is the university’s Wi-Fi network. You can use IllinoisNet on any Wi-Fi–enabled device in over 400 university buildings and common spaces on campus. To connect to IllinoisNet, log in with your NetID and password. During New Student Registration, you'll meet with academic advisors and register for fall courses.

New Student Registration sign-ups begin in mid-March. To sign up, you'll need to take the following steps: Pre-advising worksheets and placement exams will be available in myIllini beginning in May. They'll help you prepare and allow your advisor to best assist you in choosing classes that are right for you. Make sure to finish your worksheet and any placement exams you're required to take at least two weeks before your registration date, or your reservation may be subject to cancellation. Please note that any Grainger College of Engineering first-year student who has not completed the ALEKS math assessment exam one week prior to their New Student Registration date will have their program date rescheduled.

Grainger Engineering transfer students do not need to complete the ALEKS math assessment. When you sign up for registration, your college will send you more details to help you prepare for your appointment. You'll want to review the information provided by your college to learn what to expect from your appointment and beyond.
