Hybrid Intelligence Hi Augmenting Human Intellect Nwo
Over the past decade, researchers in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have made ground-breaking progress on long-standing problems. Now that AI is becoming increasingly part of our daily lives, we need to avoid being ruled by machines and their decisions. Hybrid Intelligence (HI) is the combination of human and machine intelligence, expanding human intellect instead of replacing it. It takes human expertise and intentionality into account when making meaningful decisions and perform appropriate actions, together with ethical, legal and societal values. Our goal is to design Hybrid Intelligent systems, an approach to Artificial Intelligence that puts humans at the center, changing the course of the ongoing AI revolution. By providing intelligent artificial collaborators that interact with people we amplify human capacity for learning, reasoning, decision making and problem solving.
The challenge is to build intelligent systems that augment and amplify rather than replace human intelligence, that leverage our strengths and compensate for our weaknesses. Such Hybrid Intelligence requires meaningful interaction between artificial intelligent agents and humans to negotiate and align goals, intentions and implications of actions. Developing HI needs fundamentally new solutions to core research problems in AI: current AI technology surpasses humans in many pattern recognition and machine learning tasks, but it falls short on general world knowledge, common... These challenges will be addressed in four interconnected research lines: Collaborative HI: How to design and build intelligent agents that work in synergy with humans, with awareness of each other's strengths and limitations? Adaptive HI: HI systems will need to operate in situations not anticipated by their designers, and cope with variable team configurations, preferences and roles. Explainable HI: Intelligent agents and humans need to be able to mutually explain to each other what is happening (shared awareness), what they want to achieve (shared goals), and what collaborative ways they see...
Applications in healthcare, education and science will demonstrate the potential of Hybrid Intelligence: virtual agents and robots will help children with concentration problems to study better; virtual agents and robots will support children in... The team brings together top AI researchers from across the Netherlands in machine learning, knowledge representation, natural language understanding & generation, multi-agent systems, human collaboration, cognitive psychology, multimodal interaction, social robotics, AI & law... We will initiate a Hybrid Intelligence Centre (HI Centre) to host joint research facilities, multidisciplinary PhD programs, and training and exchange programs. Sustainability of the HI Centre is ensured through tenure track positions with guaranteed long-term funding from the participating universities. With Gravitation, the government encourages excellent research in the Netherlands. The programme is for scientific consortia that have the potential to rank among the world's best in their field.
The programme is a form of direct government research funding. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has asked NWO to realise a selection procedure for Gravitation. Collaborative HI: How to design and build intelligent agents that work in synergy with humans, with awareness of each other’s strengths and limitations? We develop shared mental models for communication between humans and agents, computational theories of mind to enable collaboration, and exploit multimodal interaction for seamless dialogues. Coordinators: Dr. Hayley Hung, h.hung@tudelft.nl and Prof. Koen Hindrinks, k.v.hindriks@vu.nl Adaptive HI: The world in which Hybrid Intelligent systems operate is dynamic, as are the teams of humans and agents that make up such HI systems.
HI systems thus need to operate in situations not anticipated by their designers, and cope with variable team configurations, preferences and roles. This requires progress in online reinforcement learning, auto ML, and the integration of learning and reasoning. Coordinators: Dr. Herke van Hoof, h.c.vanhoof@uva.nl and Prof. Guszti Eiben, a.e.eiben@vu.nl Responsible HI: Addressing and mitigating some of the perceived risks of Artificial Intelligence technologies requires ethical and legal concerns to be an integral part of the design and operation of HI systems.
Values such as transparency, accountability, trust, privacy and fairness can no longer be relegated to regulations that apply after system’s deployment. We develop methods to include ethical, legal and societal considerations into the design process (“ethics in design”) and into the performance (“ethics by design”) of HI systems. Coordinators: Dr. M. Hybrid Intelligence is a 10-year NWO-funded gravitation project (2019-2029) lead by prof. Frank van Harmelen (VU). It is a Dutch national research program formed initially by a collaboration of top AI researchers from the VU Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam, the TU Delft, and the Universities of Groningen, Leiden, and... UT joined as an associate partner in 2021. Involved researchers work in areas such as machine learning, knowledge representation, natural language understanding & generation, information retrieval, multi-agent systems, psychology, multimodal interaction, social robotics, AI & law and ethics of technology. Hybrid Intelligence (HI) is the combination of human and machine intelligence, expanding human intellect instead of replacing it.
HI takes human expertise and intentionality into account when making meaningful decisions and perform appropriate actions, together with ethical, legal and societal values. The project’s goal is to design Hybrid Intelligent systems, an approach to Artificial Intelligence that puts humans at the centre, changing the course of the ongoing AI revolution. Current AI technology surpasses humans in many pattern recognition and machine learning tasks, but it falls short on general world knowledge, common sense, and the human capabilities of (i) Collaboration, (ii) Adaptivity, (iii) Responsibility... Hybrid Intelligence (HI) is the term standing for the combination of human and machine intelligence, aiming at extending human intellect instead of replacing it. The HI project is a large-scale 10 years gravity (zwaartekracht) project with a collaboration of top AI researchers from the VU Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam, the TU Delft, and the Universities of Groningen,... Abstract - Hybrid Intelligence is the intelligence emerging from a true collaboration between human and artificial intelligence. The future of humankind is determined more and more by the results of a co-evolution process of humans and their technology. Artificial intelligence is a force to be reckoned with as the autonomous intelligence it creates is still developed mostly from a business perspective to supplant people, thus reducing costs, and increasing efficiency of current... In this talk I present the different view of hybrid intelligence in which humans and artificial intelligence work together to advance human intelligence as well as artificial intelligence. When talking about artificial intelligence with a high dose of autonomy and working alongside humans, the issue of Meaningful Human Control is a vital one for our immediate and long-term safety. I briefly show how we can achieve meaningful human control with respect to the notion of fairness by combining Knowledge Technology with RL and with human intelligence.
Short bio - Prof. Dr. Catholijn Jonker is head of the Interactive Intelligence group at TU Delft and professor of Explainable Artificial Intelligence at Leiden University. She is a Fellow of EurAI, member of Academia Europaea, and member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities. She is a co-founding member of the Netherlands Academy of Engineers. She is a knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. Her publications address hybrid intelligence and interactive intelligent processes such as negotiation, teamwork and the dynamics of individual agents.
In particular, she works towards intelligent agents that can interact with their users in value-conflicting situations when also meta-values no longer solve the situation and negotiation is needed.Prestigious grants for her work are the...
