The Lesson Planning Tool guides teachers through a series of prompts about the lesson content, structure, and activities to ensure the Shifts required by college- and career-ready standards are central to the lesson. English Language Arts teachers will be guided through the process of creating a close-reading lesson. Math teachers will focus on grade or course-level standards while developing lessons. The Shifts represent the fundamental principles of the Common Core State Standards and other college- and career-ready standards. Start with “Planning a Standards-Aligned Lesson” to tackle the most critical aspects of alignment. Once you’ve completed this section, explore the other modules to deepen the alignment of your lesson.

ELA teachers should also select the text addressed in the close-reading lesson. Then as the teacher is designing or reviewing the lesson, she can use the tool to evaluate the degree of alignment present.

These lessons can be easily shared with a coach in advance of a non-evaluative observation focused on classroom instruction aligned to college- and career-ready standards, including the Common Core. Please Note: The Lexile measure (text complexity) of a book is an excellent starting point for a student’s book selection. It’s important to understand that the book’s Lexile measure should not be the only factor in a student’s book selection process.
Lexile measures do not consider factors such as age-appropriateness, interest, and prior knowledge. These are also key factors when matching children and adolescents with books they might like and are able to read. These instructional guides, focused on coaching support and lesson planning, have the potential to be very useful for educators in implementing the CCSS. They are focused on the shifts in the CCSS and provide a clear picture of what classrooms embodying these shifts look like. Also, the electronic versions of these material make it easy for teachers and coaches to know what to look/plan for and to record their lessons and notes.
