Conversely, as a wide receiver on the money down in college, Hunter produced a 133.2 passer rating when targeted.

Last year, anonymous general managers were raving about the first-round talent and a "loaded" top 10. This year, there's expected to be a quick drop-off in talent. "Multiple teams have said the player who will be drafted at No. 10 is the same quality as the player drafted at No. 32," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. "It will be about each team's preference, but in the opinion of multiple personnel people, there is not a tremendous amount of difference."

The 2025 NFL draft is finally upon us, taking place this year at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin – Titletown – home of the Green Bay Packers, the league’s all-time winningest franchise. It's also the first time the "Cheese State" has hosted the league's marquee offseason event in the common draft era (since 1967) and first overall since Milwaukee staged it in … 1940. The league's 90th annual "Player Selection Meeting" didn't feature much mystery with its No. 1 pick, but things got awfully interesting immediately afterward in what was a highly intriguing first round. USA TODAY Sports analyzed each pick, one through 32, as it was made Thursday night:

A franchise that’s never drafted a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick (and nobody at the very top since Hall of Famer Earl Campbell in 1978) clearly hopes to have its new face – and, at minimum, its first star behind center since... Ward (6-2, 219), who played for three collegiate programs in five years, turns 23 next month – but his experience and, more importantly perhaps, leadership should greatly benefit a Titans team in need of... Ward isn’t a dynamic runner but is certainly a capable athlete who often makes plays with his arms and legs outside of the pocket. But the 2024 All-American and ACC Player of the Year is being selected here because of an alpha personality and a dynamic arm, one that produced a Division 1 record 158 TD passes. He’ll need to leverage all of his estimable abilities on and off the field to turn around a franchise that needs him to stop its free fall.

Interesting to note, too, that Ward’s 2,329 passes attempted in college are at least 1,000 more than highly erratic Will Levis, Tennessee’s primary starter the past two seasons, has thrown since he entered college... Tennessee needed a quarterback and Ward is the best one in this draft. He has both talent and grit, which will endear him to his teammates and the fan base. Although hypothetical and irrelevant, it’s fair to ask where Ward would have landed in last year’s draft, or if Tennessee would have selected one of the 2024 draft’s six first-round quarterbacks ahead of him. Regardless, Ward has the skill set to become a successful NFL quarterback. Whether he becomes a Pro Bowler — and, thus, ultimately worth the No. 1 pick — remains to be seen.

Ward played at Incarnate Word and Washington State before transferring to Miami last year. There, he became one of college football’s best quarterbacks. Ward set an NCAA record with 158 career touchdown passes, plus threw for 18,184 yards with a 65.1 completion percentage. Last year alone, Ward threw for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 67.2 percent of his passes. The 2025 NFL draft officially started when the Tennessee Titans predictably made Cam Ward the No. 1 pick and their new franchise quarterback.

The move has been evident for weeks, but it’s still worth asking whether the Titans made a mistake passing on Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter, the consensus top two prospects in this draft class. The most predictable pick in the NFL draft came to fruition after the Titans announced Ward as their next franchise quarterback. Months of scouting, analysis and predictions have led to this.

The first round of the 2025 NFL draft kicked off the three-day event in Green Bay, Wisconsin in exciting fashion. For the first time in NFL history, all 32 franchises entered the night with their first-round selections but that was far from how things ended. The Tennessee Titans started the night off as expected by selecting Miami quarterback Cam Ward No. 1 overall. One pick later saw the first of many trades on the night as the Jacksonville Jaguars moved up to No. 2 overall via trade to select Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter.

There would be a further three trades and few surprise picks as the night wore on. One of the biggest stories was the fall of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. He was widely expected to be a first-round selection but he remains undrafted after the first night of the NFL draft. Instead of Sanders, it was Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart who was the second quarterback off the board after the New York Giants traded back into the first round to select him. There were another pair of deals as the Falcons moved up to get another edge rusher and the Eagles and Chiefs swapped picks to close the night. The 2025 NFL Draft is underway, and Round 1 is officially in the books.
