However, they also understand that their roster isn’t up to par in some critical areas outside the prized signal-caller position. They have left and right tackle needs, which is never ideal for a rookie quarterback. The Commanders also need to add more talent in their defensive backfield, which could mean starting a couple of rookies this upcoming season. Washington won't move out of their premium selection. Some pundits have slated this pick to be the true start of the draft with Caleb Williams expected to be selected No.

Through this 7-round mock draft, we will delve into the prospective players who may soon wear the Commanders' burgundy and gold to rejuvenate the spirits of their dedicated fan base. Following a Week 13 defeat to the Miami Dolphins, the Commanders failed to surpass or even equal their previous season’s 8–8–1 record. This marked their seventh consecutive season without a winning record. They were also knocked out of playoff contention for the third year in a row after a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Despite an encouraging start with a 2–0 record, the team's performance rapidly deteriorated. They conceded the most points of any team that year and recorded the league’s worst point differential at -189.

Additionally, their offense was ranked ninth worst in the NFL. The combination of these issues led the team to a dismal 2–13 finish for the remainder of the season. This included being swept in their division for the first time since 2019 and ending the year on an eight-game losing streak. Following the conclusion of the season, Commanders managing partner Josh Harris officially announced the team's separation from head coach Ron Rivera. The Commanders have been notably active in free agency, though without making major financial commitments to any single player. The goal appears to be to assemble a competent team around their new quarterback.

That's likely to be either Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye. Washington fans hope to achieve success with either QB in their careers. An integral part of this strategy includes securing a long-term solution at left tackle. Moreover, the Commanders are tackling the overhaul of a defense that was the most scored upon in the NFL last season. After trading away premier edge rushers Chase Young and Montez Sweat, the team has added several rotational players. However, it’s unlikely any of them are expected to fill the void left by those departures.

Everyone is certain that the Commanders will target a quarterback with their first pick, allowing them to use their final eight selections to build around their new passer. Before 2023, Washington had three consecutive seasons of close to .500 ball where they were in the playoff picture. After just 4-5 this season, the Commanders enter the 2024 NFL Draft with clear goals for each selection.

The Commanders have struggled to find a quality QB since Kirk Cousins. Sam Howell has done a decent job this season, but ultimately not the style of QB to play in Bieniemy’s system. He regressed and got benched this season. He’s been referred to as the next Patrick Mahomes and would help a struggling team become a contender. Any new regime at coach will look to find a new QB to lead the way. Williams would be the perfect candidate for whoever takes over as coach next season.

The 6-foot-6, 315-pounder only surrendered two sacks in his time with BYU. He had earned himself a pass-blocking grade of 83.2 per Pro Football Focus. He’s not as good of a run-blocker as he is with pass-blocking. Though, with an agile QB like Caleb Williams that wouldn’t be an issue. As of now, Sanders is the second-best tight-end prospect heading into the 2024 NFL Draft, the Commanders aren’t desperate at the position. However, an upgrade in terms of a young TE would be helpful.

He would provide some consistency to the passing game. Texas underutilized him as a weapon in their loss to Washington. Sanders is a polished route-runner with the ability to create separation with sharp cuts and impressive body positioning. He makes tough catches look easy and would be a perfect target for Williams if they could land both. The Commanders need some help on the Offensive line, more specifically at the center position. Van Pran could help sure up some of those problems.

With the potential of a new franchise QB coming out of the college ranks, it makes sense to pair him with one of the best centers in this years draft. He’s been a key cog on the line for Georgia for several seasons now. He holds his own in pass protection and carves up solid lanes on running plays. He’s exceptional prior to the snap as he makes sure that everyone is on the same page. The Washington Commanders went from the No. 2 overall pick to the NFC championship game in just one season thanks to making the right hires, the right moves in free agency, and the right picks in the 2024 NFL draft.

With the second overall pick in the draft, Washington chose quarterback Jayden Daniels and damn-near instantly flipped the script on a franchise that had been run into the ground by former owner Daniel Snyder.
